64 Lesson 9.

23'» hurt for ash-m 2512 km, ‘saddle the horse’. In Shiraz
-ah takes its place: asb-ah zin kfin.

§ 78. Verbs. In place of ast the old Pahlavi 6713 in
the form -ah is frequently heard; as in ch52 khail-i'
khyub-ah ‘this thing is very good’. The Perfect Par-
ticiple in -ah, as raszideh, ‘having arrived’ (§ 85, c.)
is rarely used by the common people, except in com-
pound tenses.

Sinistan, ‘to wash’, has popularly sitar instead of
the correct form shit-y for its root: as, inrd b-i-shfiyam .9,
‘am I to wash this?, which becomes inrd bi-shfiram?
The ordinary verb for ‘to get, to obtain, to purchase’
is fisfindan (fin'sfléndan) and it is used in Iflace of
giriftan (m'de § 115).

he longer form of the infinitive of Causative

Verbs (§§ 121, 122) is not popularly used: so we'have
rasz‘indan for rasanfdan or rasdndmz, ‘to cause to arrive,
to bring’. Mi'réd for mf-ravad, mi—shéd (m-f-shavad), mf-
ded (mi-dihad) are common contractions.

§ 79. Adverbs. Some popular adverbs are very
expressive, as jalcht, ‘just now, just’: pdrsc‘il, ‘last
yearfl etc.

§ 80. The following exercise and conversation are
given in English letters because they contain many
words never written in Persian. They represent also
(in the exercise) the vulgar, and (in the conversation)
the popular pronunciation, which the student ought to
know. (For translation see the Key).
